In the hills near the Himalayas lies a country that is suffering. It’s been a long journey for filmmaker John Bush, whose documentary film series “The Yatra Trilogy” concludes with this tribute to Tibet and the vibrant culture that is slowly fading away.
His previous efforts - “Dharma River” and “Prajna Earth” - took him to Buddhist hot spots across Asia, delving into the peaceful yet mysterious countries of Laos, Cambodia and Burma. But this work is more a travel diary than a documentary.
Taking his camera into monasteries and capturing everyday moments with grace, Bush forgoes the idea of interviewing and lets his footage speak for itself. Devout monks clasp their hands in prayer and everyday people go through the motions of their days.
The country is certainly beautiful, and the questions Bush poses are noteworthy: The exile of the Dalai Lama, China’s occupation of the nation and Communism are all tackled.
